gnash

Hi! my name's garrett, but a lot of people call me gnash, & i'm here to let you know you're not alone. in gnash, the g is silent, but my feelings aren't. simply put, i was raised that it's okay to have feelings, as long as you aren't afraid to talk about them. so i've chosen to do that by documenting the feelings i have in my heart in my art, & lately, more specifically, in my music.

when i have a feeling, to get it off my chest, i find it's most therapeutic for me to make a song about it. what's even more redeeming is that nowadays when i release a song, an open-minded & constantly growing group of people from all around the world (who have come together over my music & call themselves the dreamers) let me know they have felt, currently feel, or will eventually feel the same. that makes us both feel better, & they help me just as much as i help them. so really, what i'm creating isn't a fan base, it's a support group & a movement, & it's filling with people who let each other know that whatever it is, however you feel, it's going to be okay.

everything in life is about balance. that's the number one thing i've learned while growing up in a big city like los angeles. my first single, "i hate u you i love u," & my label, happysad, spelled :): , both, in the titles alone, tackle balancing emotional issues everyone faces daily, but most people are afraid to (or don't find the time to) discuss. so i've found the best answer to this problem is for me to do the talking so the listener can focus on thinking.

my music has become a sort of emotional guide book for those who are open to experiencing life's up's & down's, but who are also committed to an overall positive outlook on life. the 3 ep's i've released, "u," "me," & "us," serve as a walk through a break up, finding yourself, & finding something new, but also the universality of that journey (& the harmony that comes from learning how to co-exist with other people in this often self-centered world we live in). eventually, i want to make a song for every feeling, & i felt this 3-part, 21-song series was a great place to start.

i make music that connects with people. i think that's because my music is as real as i am. i produce & write it all in my garage, which is why my production stays simple & clean -- to my listeners & i, it's not about how it sounds, it's about what i'm saying. being honest isn't always easy (or pretty), but it's usually what's best, & honestly my favorite music has always been about the lyrics to me anyway. that's why i draw inspiration from songwriters like cisco adler, jack johnson, & ben gibbard -- they're nothing but themselves in every way.

for me, music is just one way of being creative, & so far has been the easiest way to get my feelings out. i'll never be afraid to express myself, & i feel that's where my biggest strength lies. i don't see myself as just a musician, or as a songwriter, or as a producer/dj. i'm an artist in all ways, & i will use any means necessary to help people feel, & know in their hearts, minds, & souls that they are not alone.

thanks for reading this & wanting to learn more about me!

...& remember, it's gonna be okay tonight, because tomorrow's just a dream away :):

Marc E. Bassy

Marc E. Bassy is an artist pumping out empowering notes in his music and through his own independent label, New Gold Medal Records. He started off at a young age and caught the attention of labels and fans with his smooth blend of pop and R&B. He admits he’s a rebel against the big label system of playing corporate politics or sticking to a formal radio-friendly release schedule to compete with mega pop stars. By his own design, his musical prowess has landed him in studios with peers across genres like Kehlani, YG, Ty Dolla $ign, Charlie Puth, G-Eazy and Hailee Steinfeld among others, proving that he has the range when it comes to tackling any type of song.
These days, Inspired by the recent artists that have taken the more entrepreneurial route with their businesses, Bassy wanted to flip the script on his own trajectory after swerving in and out of label deals since he was 20 years old. “It's the best possible scenario for any musician to own their own music, to be in control of their own marketing and just be distributed by [another company],” says Bassy. “‘New gold medal’ is just the idea that the standard has changed now for what success means in this industry. It's not just about having a song on the radio. It's about having an impact on the culture and taking care of your people, and that comes from ownership and independence.”

Beyond the music, Bassy -- who comes from a family of business owners, including a mother who owns a successful personal care product company and aunts who own restaurants -- functions with a core team of six to eight people. While signed to a major label, he noticed that the higher-ups would place a firewall between him and his creative vision. So instead of being at the mercy of label reps, he started his own company to put the money back into his and his team’s pockets and minimize the number of obstacles they faced when it came to sharing his art.

Now, the resilience seems to pour out of the speakers when his songs play. For his forthcoming sophomore album PMD (which shares a similar name to his 2018 EP, Post Modern Depression), he tapped heavy-hitting producers like Mike Dean, Happy Perez, Nic Nac, and Count Bassy who fine-tuned the sonics of his work. The content is also a departure from his sad boy stance, pining for an ex. Take his track “Die Hard,” inspired by the 1988 Bruce Willis film that opts more for self-assurance than desperation. “I'm not writing from a back-against-the-wall-perspective anymore, which is where I used to be,” he explains. “I would say it's less desperation now and more reflection and confidence.”

His current outlook on life also offers the ideal springboard for the theme of his sophomore record: exploring the causes of depression and anxiety in modern culture while still delivering a mix of big pop songs and hip-hop-leaning gems about love and sex. “We live in a world where everyone is more connected than ever, but feels more lonely than ever, and that's just the interesting thing to explore.” When it comes to categorizing his music, though, Bassy prefers to be flexible, just as he’s done throughout his career. “I don't think there's anyone that goes all the way from the hood to straight Top 40 radio like I do,” he says. “And that's a hard thing to put in a box.”
