It’s safe to say every American has a fond memory of childhood 4th of July celebrations. Whether it’s marching in a hometown parade, grilling hot dogs and hamburgers after a neighborhood baseball game, attending the national fireworks show in Washington, DC, or spending the long weekend along a shoreline, American Independence Day is an iconic, shared national experience.
If you’re one of the thousands of military troops stationed overseas this summer, July 4th will bring you new memories and maybe a new tradition or two. Just because you’re in a foreign country you don’t have to miss out on the festivities.
Make Musical Memories
AFE’s Heat Wave 2022 is in full swing on July 4th, and on the days and weeks surrounding it. Daya, Sweet Siren, Drowning Pool, Kat Perkins and Jerrod Niemann are all on tour throughout Europe, SW and the UK, and the special four-performer lineup of Heat Wave stars during RIMPAC will swell national pride throughout Hawaii.
Sweet Siren celebrates the 4th with three special Fourth of July shows in Germany: At USAG Wiesbaden on 2 & 3 July, and at USAG Grafewoehr on July 4th. Jerrod Niemann‘s Heat Wave tour takes him to the Netherlands and Germany from 1 July – 4 July; Kat Perkins performs 1 July – 5 July in SWA; Drowning Pool adds their explosive stage presence to audiences in SWA 2 July – 4 July. The Heat Wave Summer Series in Hawaii during RIMPAC, featuring Chase Rice, MAX, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and Marc E. Bassy, begins 29 June and culminates in a star-studded show on 4 July at JB Pearl-Hickam.
Food Memories Reborn
If you rely on your tastebuds to bring back the joys of Independence Days past, you’re not alone. Burgers, steaks and hot dogs lead the list of most popular grilling foods for the holiday. But what do you make to go with them?
Old Glory Striped Salad
Place a layer of salad greens on a rectangular tray or plate. Make a stripe design of chopped red tomatoes and cubed feta cheese. In the top left corner, create a square of “stars” with chopped black olives. Want to make it a sweet salad? Use chopped watermelon or strawberries for the red stripes, jicama for the white, and blueberries for the stars. Either way, drizzle on your favorite vinaigrette and enjoy!
Boston Berry Goodness
Cut large strawberries in half. Fill center with a dollop of yogurt, whip cream, cream cheese or cottage cheese. Top dollop with a blueberry and salute the simplicity.
Layer a tall drinking glass with yogurt, pound cake, chopped strawberries and blueberries. Dig through the layers for a spoonful of red, white and blue delights.
America’s independence remains intact through the selflessness of the men and women of today’s military forces and their supportive families at home. As our nation celebrates our country’s history this July 4th, AFE will also be honoring the present-day defenders of our independence. We send you all our sincere thanks.
